Our growing world population needs an increasing amount of safe, affordable and nutritious food. World population has doubled in the 40 years between 1968 (3.55 billion) to 2008 (6.8 billion). It is now estimated that the population of the world will be a little over 9 billion people by 2050. That’s 100,000,000 a year, or 273,972 a day!
What is fertilizer and why do we use it? Fertilizer is responsible for approximately 50 percent of our world’s food production. It is a vital ingredient used to grow strong and healthy plants – both in the garden and in the farm field. The connection between fertilizer and population is evident. As Nobel Peace Prize Winner Dr. Norman Borlaug explains, "This is a basic problem, to feed 6.6 billion people. Without chemical fertilizer, forget it. The game is over."
Nutrients enhance soil fertility and minimize losses to the environment when applied at the right time, place and rate using best management practices.
We're not kidding ourselves, we know that fertilizer isn't the most exciting subject in the world, but it is one of the most important. That said, we wanted to see what exactly people did know about this vital topic. We looked to our own backyard in Washington, D.C., to see how much fertilizer knowledge was out there. It turns out, there wasn't a whole lot.
We set out to change all that with a flood of advertisements on Metro railcars throughout the city. And as you can see, we started to get the message across.
People of all ages love delicious food, and it is about time to give a little love back to the thing responsible for growing that food...fertilizer. That's what inspired the following ads. Click on the thumbnail to view:
What do pumpkin soup, moist carrot cake, baked spaghetti cakes and chocolate chip cookies have in common? Besides being delicious, they all share the same main ingredient: fertilizer! Every one of the seven billion people in the world should be grateful for crop nutrients. Fertilizer – nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potash (K) – is responsible for 50 percent of our food. So bon appétit thanks to N, P and K!
When people think of food, fertilizer's role in helping grow that food doesn’t usually come to mind. You can imagine people's shock when they find that fertilizer is vital to almost every piece of food we eat. How vital? Well, turns out fertilizer is responsible for 50 percent of the world's food supply. Shocking or not, it's the truth. These two radio spots put that fact into perspective.
This spot details how fertilizer not only helps sustain life, but is indirectly responsible for many of the memories we have.
This spot highlights our tendency to take for granted the role fertilizer has played in all the wonderful lunches and dinners we have had over our lifetime.
